The Presidential Council on Intellectual Property held the Artificial Intelligence-Intellectual Property Conference on the last 4th to celebrate Intellectual Property Day and to promote social discussions on the issues under discussion at the ｢Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Intellectual Property Special Committee｣ (hereinafter referred to as the AI ​​Special Committee) the committee which was launched in June and to promote communication with the public.

AI Special Committee Chairman Lee Sangjik announced that through this conference he will solve the uncertainty in the industrial and research fields related to artificial intelligence-intellectual property and come up with visible and concrete policy plans to promote economic and social innovation. In addition he added that he will establish principles and directions of the pan-government level to lead international discussions about global issues.

In the final discussion session Professor Son Seungwoo(Chung-Ang University) announced the introduction of the ｢Special Artificial Intelligence-Intellectual Property Law｣ to resolve the ambiguity of the current legislation of intellectual property rights and to develop the artificial intelligence industry. In this regard Professor Lee Dae-hee(Korea University) the chairman and panelists from industry and academia held a heated discussion on various issues such as whether artificial intelligences creations need to be protected and whether inventions and works created by artificial intelligence will be protected to the same level as humans works.

The following paragraph is an interview with Professor Son Seungwoo who participated in the conference.

Q1.Please introduce yourself .(job)

Son Seungwoo  : I am Son Seungwoo a professor at the Department of Industrial Security at Chung-Ang University.

Q2.Why do you think intellectual property is important?

Son Seungwoo : We live in an age of digital revolution. I want to call that as a resource from heads. Small and medium-sized enterprises also have more than 80% of intangible assets. I think it is important because intellectual property is the most important asset in the modern society.

Q3. What do you think which is the best intellectual property in the world in history? And what is the reason?

Son Seungwoo : It is a transistor. It was first created at Bell Labs in 1948. The transistor makes it possible to use many modern electronic devices. So I think it is the most essential and integrated circuit.

Q4. If you have any intellectual property (patents designs trademarks copyrights trade secrets etc.) please introduce them.

Son Seungwoo : I have about 60 theses 10 books and lectures.

Q5. What do you think Korea should do to become an intellectual property powerhouse?

Son Seungwoo : Manpower training is important. In particular I think it is necessary to train skilled manpower. It would be nice to create jobs through various convergences to create good quality jobs in the private sector.

Q6. Last question! How would you describe the intellectual property in one word? (Intellectual property is OOO!)

Son Seungwoo : Intellectual Property is the Basic National Power. I think that it is the basic national power which is the basis of the nations and the publics wealth creation.

Professor Son Seungwoo is a Doctor of Laws(S.J.D) at the University of Wisconsin in the U.S. head of the Industry-University Collaboration Group/Startup Support Group of Dankook University a member of the Korea Copyright Protection Committee a legal consultant of the United Nations Commission On International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and is currently a professor at the Department of Industrial Security at Chung-Ang University. Also he is the president of the Korean Intellectual Property Business Association the president of the Knowledge Job Forum a professional member of the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property and a member of the Defense Industry Technology Protection Committee. In 2019 he was awarded the Intellectual Property Person Award by the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property. He wrote Understanding Intellectual Property Law (3rd Edition) (2019) Fair Economy and Intellectual Property (2019) “Review of Small Invention Protection System from a Comparative Perspective” 「Industrial Property Rights」 No. 63 (2020) and many other books.
